Mexico City, Chicago, Houston, Guadalajara. Twelve million people in the capital, 2.6 million on the Lake Michigan shore, 2.3 million in the Gulf Coast energy hub. The Central Time metazone reaches from the Canadian tundra to the Costa Rican cloud forest, and the clock on the wall tells a different story depending on which side of a national border you stand. Some cities spring forward. Others never do. The only way to get a meeting time right is to stop thinking in three-letter codes and start thinking in IANA zones.

Which US cities sit in the Central Time Zone

The zone covers parts of 20 states. Chicago anchors the northern half. Houston and Dallas anchor Texas. The IANA zone for every US city that observes Central Time rules is America/Chicago.

City State Population
Chicago Illinois 2,664,452
Houston Texas 2,314,157
San Antonio Texas 1,526,656
Dallas Texas 1,326,087

The DST rhythm in the US Central zone

US Central Time observes daylight saving under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Clocks go forward at 02:00 local on the second Sunday in March and fall back at 02:00 local on the first Sunday in November.

In 2026 the spring change lands on Sunday 8 March. Clocks jump from 02:00 CST to 03:00 CDT. The autumn change lands on Sunday 1 November, when 02:00 CDT becomes 01:00 CST. In 2027 the dates are 14 March and 7 November.

What the offset means for daily schedules

During standard months the zone runs at UTC−6. During daylight months it runs at UTC−5. New York sits one hour ahead year-round. Los Angeles sits two hours behind. London is six hours ahead of CST, seven hours ahead of CDT. Tokyo is fifteen hours ahead of CST, fourteen hours ahead of CDT.

Banks open at 9:00 AM. NYSE and NASDAQ open at 8:30 AM Central and close at 3:00 PM. NFL Sunday games kick off at noon and 3:25 PM. Prime time television runs 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, simultaneous with the Eastern feed.

Mexico's Central Time cities and the end of DST

Mexico abolished national daylight saving time in October 2022. Most of the country now stays on permanent standard time. The capital and its surrounding megacities are on UTC−6 all year.

When Mexico City and Chicago line up

During US standard months the two cities share the same clock. During US daylight months Chicago runs one hour ahead. On 15 January 2026 both are on UTC−6. On 15 July 2026 Chicago is on UTC−5 while Mexico City stays on UTC−6.

The border municipalities that still change clocks

Matamoros and Ojinaga follow US DST rules to stay synchronized with their Texan neighbours. Their IANA zones (America/Matamoros, America/Ojinaga) reflect the exception. Before scheduling a call with a border city, check the current offset.

Daily rhythm in Mexico's Central zone

Business hours typically run 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM with a long midday break. The main meal, comida, happens between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. A light evening meal, cena, falls between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Banks close at 4:00 PM. Schools run a morning shift from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and an afternoon shift from 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM in some areas.

Canada's Central Time cities and the Saskatchewan anomaly

Winnipeg follows US-style DST. Regina and Saskatoon do not.

City Province DST IANA Zone
Winnipeg Manitoba Yes America/Winnipeg
Regina Saskatchewan No America/Regina
Saskatoon Saskatchewan No America/Swift_Current

Why Saskatchewan stays on CST year-round

Most of Saskatchewan stopped changing clocks in 1966. The province holds at UTC−6 permanently. In July that offset matches neighbouring provinces on CDT. In January it matches them on CST. The clock on the wall never moves, but the relationship to Calgary and Winnipeg shifts twice a year.

Other Canadian zones in the Central metazone

America/Rankin_Inlet and America/Resolute in Nunavut observe US-style DST. America/Menominee in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and three Indiana zones (America/Indiana/Knox, America/Indiana/Tell_City) also fall under the Central metazone with DST.

Central American cities on permanent CST

No daylight saving. No clock changes. No exceptions. Every city in this block sits at UTC−6 all year.

City Country IANA Zone
Guatemala City Guatemala America/Guatemala
San Salvador El Salvador America/El_Salvador
Managua Nicaragua America/Managua
Tegucigalpa Honduras America/Tegucigalpa
Belize City Belize America/Belize
San José Costa Rica America/Costa_Rica

Scheduling with Central America from the US

In winter the time difference is zero. In summer the US side shifts to CDT and runs one hour ahead. A 9:00 AM call in Chicago in July is 8:00 AM in San Salvador.

The three meanings of "CST" and why they cause mistakes

CST is not one time zone. It is three.

  • Central Standard Time (UTC−6). North America. The subject here.
  • China Standard Time (UTC+8). All of China, one zone by political decision since 1949.
  • Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5). With DST shifting to UTC−4, roughly on the US schedule.

The CDT naming trap

People say "CST" year-round. In July that is wrong. The correct term during daylight months is CDT (UTC−5). The safe generic label is CT, Central Time. If someone in Chicago says "3 PM CST" in July, they mean 3 PM CDT. If someone in Beijing says "CST," they mean UTC+8. Context does not always save you. Ask for the UTC offset.

How to check the time without getting burned

Do not search "CST time now." The result depends on where the search engine thinks you are. Use the IANA zone name instead. America/Chicago returns the correct offset with DST applied. America/Mexico_City returns permanent UTC−6. America/Regina returns permanent UTC−6 with no DST history. Query zoneinfo directly. Every programming language can do it.

The rule of thumb

US Central zone, Manitoba, and the Mexican border strip: DST applies. Central America, Saskatchewan, and the rest of Mexico: it does not. Memorise the exceptions, not the list.

What the Sunshine Protection Act would change

The US Senate passed a permanent DST bill in 2022. The House did not take it up. As of 2026 the bill has been reintroduced but not enacted. Several states including Texas, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Illinois have passed legislation to adopt permanent DST contingent on federal approval. None can act without Congress. If the law ever passes, the US Central zone would stay on CDT (UTC−5) year-round. Mexico City and Chicago would then share the same offset permanently. Until then, the clocks keep moving.
